New poem from the “Beyond” series.

I awake covered in red dust
after the storm passed.

In the depths of the crater
the sun shone dimly over the edge.

I see you left without me
moving beyond the fractured surface.

There is no blame.
There is now only me.

Beyond the mountains
the sun rises on a new day.

Surrounded by unnamed peaks,
unclimbed by humans, I head off into the void.

Through the forest
with only my thoughts
and the morning sun
reflecting off ice and snow.

Through the forest
the sky moves and
the cold wind shuffles
and conceals.

The previous days fall away,
my mind begins to empty
and the wind carries away
the fragments.

Free of what is no longer needed
the feelings of loss and being alone
are replaced with content and comfort
as that wind is you beyond memory.

I see you across the distance
a face not known yet
I feel a connection
and I would follow you
but the space elongates.

I woke walking through an unfamiliar
valley of overturned sand,
the walls not earth but
fragments and rusted steel
reminders of a history
of time forgotten now
unearthed and the memories
are bitter and foreign.

There, I still you in the distance.

A fleeting shadow drifting in the waves.

With an apathetic look in tired eyes
he turned away from the edge,
hundreds of feet above the turbulent
waters, and walked toward the forest,

across the empty road absent
of any traffic since the morning,
into the cultivated fields, curiously empty,
and sat next to the stone marker and finally wept.

I heard the whisper before they did.
And both heads turned toward the

forest in silence or curiosity
as the wind left us here alone.
