Poem – Captured Halos

The black morning hides tall pine trees
rising against the star filled sky.

The silence broken only by the canines response
to the pack of coyotes and their screams.

A heavy mist hugs the wet ground
and stones glistened with the slightest light.

Through the drifting smoke
the scattered sun brings to life the forest

illuminated in halos captured in photos
that will help remember the peace and quiet.

Poem – The Ancients

Scattered across the window
Overlooking the rocky outline
Of the lake shore.

Cast from the memories of thousand years
Together we embrace as the fire
Fills the black sky with our own universe
And the reflection of the time we have endured
And the souls we have emerged as on the other side.

Standing side by side with flow stretching across endless stars and planets
we emerge each awakening flanked by the white and black wolf.

Together we will enter Valhalla and live among the giants
who have guided and taught us ways of the ancients.

Poem – Emerging

Emerging from the forest
through the last barrier of this life,

beasts of the past intertwined with shadows
roam through the open field playing out their purpose.

Standing out of their way as
I am a visitor passing to the next life.

Crossing the field I am met
by concrete and metal machines.

Is this my next life
or only a preview of the coming revolution?

Smoke fills the darkened sky.

I forget where I am.

The field merges with the horizon.

Beasts disappear – were they even real?

Trees bend and in unison lift me from the field.

Passing through smoke filled dreams of the past or future
I emerge at the base of granite peaks.

Trees and the True Home

The solitude and calm of a northern MN forest is an inviting and welcome break from the city. Pine trees gently sway in the autumn wind and the sun casts tall shadows beneath the crystal blue. This place is a refuge for animals and people and a delicate balance plays out each day.

We are but guests here and with time we are consumed by the trees and the earth to become one and the same.

We are but caretakers here tasked with preserving what is natural, what is instinctual, and lessen our impact.

We are blessed to be here and the reward is absolute silence, snow covered pine needles, whippoorwills, evening visits from coyotes, elusive bears, soaring ravens, and the ritual of becoming ash and returning to the sky, returning to home.

Poem – Sense of All

And in the evening light
we chase the floating particles,
each a piece of ourselves
set free from the fire.

In this moment we lose sense of “I”
and become the “we” with the
trees, the light, the darkness
and the whole of the universe.

Poem – Rebirth

At the top of the mountain
beyond the pass
I stopped and looked back
at the path I wandered
and there were no footsteps
in the powdered snow.

Further beyond the talus and scree
the empty field burns

and I watch with waning
fear as I let go of that

previous version of me
burning beneath the tree of life.

Poem – What Remains

What remains shrouded in smoke
behind the veil we created?

What is left when the empty
field clears and our eyes open?

So many questions remain at the end of
each day with little reprieve to find the answers.

The fires build and we respond
or let them burn out with no intervention.

I return to the smoke mask
to find what remains of who I am supposed to be.

Poem – No Words

“No words”, as the sky burns
and we watch from another place.

“No words”, as I remember a time
before time standing atop mountains
overlooking valleys filled with
smoke and spirits of ten thousand beings.

Poem – A Season in Hell

A season in hell has passed
as I rose through the fractures
in the liquid earth and woke
in the fields beneath the winter sun.

Surrounded by snow and bare trees
I immediately recognized this place
and only knew of my journey here
by the deep and fresh scars.

Poem – Cleansed Through Smoke and Fire

On the earth I walk with light steps
and place fallen branches in the pit.

To the sky I gaze through pine trees
and watch smoke disperse to the heavens.

To my future self I set the path,
wash away the dirt, and cleanse the soul.
