The black morning hides tall pine trees
rising against the star filled sky.
The silence broken only by the canines response
to the pack of coyotes and their screams.
A heavy mist hugs the wet ground
and stones glistened with the slightest light.
Through the drifting smoke
the scattered sun brings to life the forest
illuminated in halos captured in photos
that will help remember the peace and quiet.
Eyes open to the blackened sky.
I find myself on scattered rocks.
Cold waves wash over me as I struggle to remember.
Ravens call across the bay.
In the distance a portal opens and for the first time in years I feel hope.
Ravens now carry the fragments I desire to keep.

Putting aside differences,
opinions, and our views of
the outside from the inside,
whoever or whatever designed and created
this, is pretty awesome.
Leaving behind the city
we pass the line separating
concrete and dirt path.
Recent snow has hardened and crunches
with each step.
I pause and silence myself
and hear ravens nearby.
I pause and hold my breath
and imagine what secrets are beneath the empty field.
With the charged air wavering
between summer and autumn
we walked beneath the canopies
throwing scattered light on
faces thankful for the sun
thankful for the peace within the city.
Thinking only about my feet
and where they land next
I closed my eyes and kept
moving along the path
I opened my eye and I was
cast between here and there.
I awoke whole with
an empty mind.
I left the front
door into the morning
air filled with mist
and raven calls from
the small pond.
I was along and not alone
and took comfort in murky
sun giving away purple light.
