awaken

Poem – Beneath the Surface

I keep it within reach
just beneath the surface.

It is always awake with eyes
open watching me and ready

to arise at the simplest command
always there beneath the surface.

Time has not soften the beast.
Time has not taken away the power.

Over and through the years
I have learned to control

when the beast arises
the appropriate moments to step aside.

Poem – Awaken

I woke in the fields.
The fields I have never seen.
The fields black beneath the white sun.

Limbs emerge from snow.
Snow scatters into the wind.
Wind twists the clouds around me.

From the horizon a train nears.
The horizon shakes and fractures.
The fractured fragments cover my mind.

I was not yet ready to awaken.

Empty Field Dharma Resources

I have read many books, different views, and different schools of thought. Everything I study now is focused on Japanese and Tibetan Buddhism, which have slightly varied paths, for lack of a better word. When I read and think about each, the Japanese makes more sense and resonates deeper within.

1. Tibetan Buddhism Mahayana – Always working and reaching for enlightenment, as an end-goal of sorts.
2. Japanese Buddhism Soto Zen – You are already enlightened, and the work is becoming more aware of this, and how to exist within this space (or field).

As part of my studies, I have chosen these works:

1. “Cultivating the Empty Field”, The Silent Illumination of Zen Master Hongzhi
2. “The Profound Treasury of the Ocean of Dharma: Volume 1”, The Path of Individual Liberation
3. “The Flower Ornament Scripture: A Translation of the Avatamsaka Sutra”
4. “Visions of Awakening Space and Time: Dogen and the Lotus Sutra”

As I become more aware of this, I will be writing about my understanding and how this pattern of thought/no-thought works for me in my daily life. The empty field has become an important aspect of how I see things, my role individually, and how going within and re-emerging into the world/universe brings forth a more peaceful and calm person.

New Project – Empty Field Dharma

I have started a new site dedicated to information and discussion around the Empty Field Dharma. The concept of an Empty Field is derived from Zen Master Hongzhi from the book “Cultivating the Empty Field” and the Soto Zen school of Buddhism.

Poem – Deconstructed, part 3 (Fracture 12)

Have we met before? Perhaps on a distant planet, on the other side of the known universe.

White and gold petals scattered through the void we cannot see, while consuming everything we do see.

I stand within light on a floating island. The willow tree comforts me on the long journey from planet to planet, looking for you, whose voice I can hear as a vibration, but the source is not visible.

Are you her, the angelic tone that pushes away transgressions and thoughts of fire and puts to rest questions returning no answers?

I reach across the dark matter through space in time searching for the light and the vibration I feel from you from far reaching places and spaces.

The day had no beginning, no end. The sun and moon do not exist. A void in the universe that has no explanation, an origin that escapes us.

Spheres and prisms suspended within the blackness are floating in the distance, displaying unfamiliar images and scenes from a path, a river and a great race.

And I move forward, toward the spheres, a chance meeting with a source and free spirit existing beyond the bonds.

Energy buzzes through fingertips, veins vibrate against bone, and my spine is loose.

The central fire burns, expands, and races outward, depositing dust particles and ingredients for life.

When my eyes close and the light subsides, clarity arrives knocking on the inner soul, the mind’s eye scanning across distant horizons. Within are the answers we seek, the light source that shines forth igniting the tunnel, expanding the vision before us.

The purple sun rises twice each day awakening weary eyes and mind.

And within the awakening billions of years pass and I see the one cross-legged suspended, held by hands of light, waiting.
